Cruise For A Cause

Experience and Support Alaska’s Public Lands

Saturday May 11, 2024

Event Information

Location

We will cruise the Resurrection Bay area, viewing Kenai Fjords National Park's stunning coastlines, spires, cliffs, and coves.

From the waters, there’s an opportunity to glimpse some of the unique coastal landforms, glacial processes, and wildlife that are part of why this area is protected.

Arrival:

Please plan to arrive at the Seward Harbor 360 Hotel by 3 pm so we can board the ship and be on our way by 3:30 pm. We will be aboard Major Marine Tours Spirit of Matushka, and Alaska Geographic staff will check you in as you arrive. Allow 4 hours of driving time from Anchorage due to increased construction and traffic on the highway.

Food and Beverages:

Alaska Geographic will provide a meal for guests, and beverages can be purchased (cash and card) via Major Marine’s cash bar. You are welcome to bring your own reusable water bottles (AK Geo bottles will be available for purchase) and personal snacks, but please consider bringing as little waste as possible.

Auction and Raffle:

We're not only celebrating the partnership between Alaska Geographic and our public land agencies, we're also fundraising to continue our educational efforts. We will have a silent auction where you can bid on great prizes alongside a raffle. If you're interested in donating auction items or becoming a sponsor, please reach out to our team at [email protected].

Attire:

Dress in layers. This is not a formal event, please dress comfortably. More questions about what you should bring, what you should wear, and more can be found on Major Marine’s FAQ page.

Direct Support to Kenai Fjords National Park

We've given back over $23 million in support directly to Alaska's public lands since 1959. This event will take place in the waters around Kenai Fjords National Park, for which we've provided essential funding and project management. In 2022-2023, more than $55,500 in funding was provided to support the park's interpretation, education, and research activities. Below are some of the many initiatives completed at Kenai Fjords  with AK Geo assistance:

  • We support marine science education, distance learning programming, Visitor Center and Nature Center programming, interpretive hikes, range chats, and popups by providing funding for staff.
  • Alaska Geographic also helps the park print junior ranger books, maps, and other brochures, ensuring that visitors get the most out of their visit. Updates to exhibits, displays, and waysides to increase accessibility and accuracy are frequent uses of AK Geo-provided funding.
  • Support for park volunteers and supplies for special community events is provided through AK Geo funding.
  • In the new Kenai Fjords Visitor Center, finished in 2019, Alaska Geographic funded a large mural and two traditional Sugpiaq hunting visors made by a Kenai Peninsula native artisan. These details help to tell the story of Kenai Fjords, its resources, and its people, adding additional richness to the visitor center experience.
  • The education pavilion at Exit Glacier was built with funds provided by Alaska Geographic. The pavilion hosts daily programs in the summer where hundreds of school groups from across South Central Alaska learn about the park. This pavilion has been enjoyed for twelve years and we expect to continue for many years to come.

As stated by park ranger Laura Sturtz, “From exhibits to brochures, supporting staff training and even reimbursing volunteers, Alaska Geographic is not just a partner but an integral part of our success.”

About Alaska Geographic

Who We Are

Since 1959, Alaska Geographic has been making Alaska’s public lands more accessible to everyone and working to keep them wild for future generations. We are the official nonprofit partner to Alaska’s National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, National Forests, BLM public lands, and Alaska State Parks.

Our mission expands beyond stores and into the lands themselves with educational programs fit for youth, adults, and families. During these expeditions, participants adventure into Alaska's spectacular public lands, from braided glacial rivers to lush temperate rainforests. Alongside AK Geo guides, they meet and work with rangers to collect data, assist in conservation efforts, learn about ecological and environmental relationships, and, most importantly, connect with our wild places.

We are actively building opportunities for engagement in outdoor recreation education and stewardship activities for the teens who need it the most while also fostering healthy lifestyle habits and developing lifelong stewards of public lands.

Teacher Training Sign-Up

We offer field courses accredited through the University of Alaska-Anchorage for Professional Development Credit. There's still room in the Kenai Fjords Floating Workshop: Sea Kayaking course!

Teen Expeditions applications for our 2024 season are open!
All participants receive a full-tuition scholarship. These expeditions are offered at no cost to the participant. To nominate a student, visit ourTeen Expeditions page.

Denali Field Courses
Popular multi-day field courses immerse participants in intensive wilderness-based experiences led by experts in fields ranging from geology and birds to mosses, mammals, and more. These are active learning vacations. These courses are accredited through the University of Alaska and are designed for adults. Find a course for you today!

The core foundation of Alaska Geographic is education. We fulfill our mission through interpretive retail and experiential outdoor programs in collaboration with our agency partners.

In our 30+ retail stores throughout Alaska, we work with local and national vendors to curate informative and commemorative products that extend the educational mission of the public lands. Our themed stores provide meaningful remembrances of a visit and have generated more than 23 million dollars in revenue granted back to the public lands to support interpretive initiatives we all benefit from.
